City of Cedar Rapids Welcomes Iowa League of Cities September 20-22

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – The City of Cedar Rapids and the Cedar Rapids Tourism Office are excited to welcome the Iowa League of Cities to the City of Five Seasons. The League, which represents more than 850 cities in Iowa, will hold their 125th Annual Conference & Exhibit September 20–22, 2023 at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse Convention Complex.

The League, established in 1898, serves as the unified voice of cities, providing advocacy, training and guidance to strengthen Iowa’s communities. The League’s Annual Conference & Exhibit was most recently in Cedar Rapids back in 2015.

“The League first hosted a conference in Cedar Rapids back in 1904. We're thrilled to return this year for our 125th-anniversary celebration, offering special opportunities for members to mark this milestone while advancing our mission to strengthen Iowa's communities,” said Alan Kemp, Iowa League of Cities Executive Director.

“This year’s event holds special significance, as Cedar Rapids approaches its own 175th anniversary,” said City Manager Jeff Pomeranz. “While a lot has changed in the 120 years since we first hosted the League in Cedar Rapids, our commitment to collaborating with communities across Iowa remains at the heart of this conference.”

The 125th Annual Conference & Exhibit, attended by city officials from across the state, will feature tours of Cedar Rapids, seminars, sessions, continuing education opportunities, budgeting tips, networking, strategic planning, an awards banquet and so much more.

“We are excited to showcase Cedar Rapids’ creativity and resilience through several interactive sessions and tours that will highlight our growth and revitalization,” said Mayor Tiffany O'Donnell. “This will be a valuable platform to share with, and learn from, fellow communities and mayors across Iowa — and to build a brighter future together.”

As an exciting conclusion, the League will close the event with the induction of their next president, Cedar Rapids Councilmember Ashley Vanorny.

“I am honored for this opportunity to foster collaboration among Iowa's cities. Being the first woman from Cedar Rapids in this role holds a special place in my heart, as it connects to the start of my journey in public service here,” Vanorny expressed. “The Iowa League of Cities played a crucial role in preparing me for my Council position through their Municipal Leadership Academy, which ultimately led to my Certified Municipal Elected Official (CEMO) designation. I'm excited to learn from municipal colleagues across the state at this conference — and share the valuable lessons I've gained from the exceptional Cedar Rapids City team. I firmly believe in the strength of Iowa's cities and the positive impact we can achieve together.”
