Local Makers

All around the country, the maker movement is taking shape.

People are not only embracing the idea of shopping local, but also shopping to support the artisans creating right in their own community or those communities they visit.

At local shops all around the Cedar Rapids area, you can pick up a gift—for yourself or others—that is uniquely crafted by a local maker. Check out these shops and talk with the shop owners about the creations gracing their shelves.

The Garden Wren is part flower shop, part knitter’s paradise in Czech Village. Inside you’ll also find whimsical, eclectic, and poetic pottery, floral arrangements, and textiles created by the shop owner.

The Create Exchange is also located in the Czech Village. A haven for crafters, much of the store is dedicated to supplies for upcycled projects. But there’s also an area filled with everything from furniture pieces to jewelry, keychains, and magnets made by locals.

Found + Formed is just down the street in the Czech Village. A vintage shop that features a variety of clothing, accessories, jewelry and housewares, you’ll also find handmade items like stickers and clothing by local artisans.

NewBo Shops at 208—located in the NewBo neighborhood just across the river—is filled with all kinds of artsy goodness. Wall hangings, room sprays, seasonal décor, and everything in between, it’s a great spot to pick up a gift.

The Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio is a regionally recognized glass and ceramics studio that hosts a variety of classes, workshops, and artists-in-residence throughout the year. Stop in to check out their gallery space where you can take home a unique piece to add to your collection.

Scout of Marion, a quaint, distinctive boutique, is worth the drive to Marion. Inside you’ll find an artfully curated selection of gifts, home décor, kitchen essentials, and self-care indulgences, some of which are hand crafted by local makers.
